Pupils at St Cuthbert’s Learn Key Lessons in Construction Site Safety
Children at Cardiff’s St. Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School learned about the potential dangers in and around building sites when we gave them a presentation on the subject.
We went along to St Cuthberts, in Letton Road, with a representative from our Schooner Way development partners, Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA).
As a company, we are happy to carry out a number of these important visits to schools near our active construction sites throughout the year.
During the visit, the children were eager to try on the kind of safety gear that our site team members wear each day, and they were keen to pose for pictures with the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme (CCS) mascot, Honor Goodsite.
Our Community Engagement Manager, Antonia John, said: “We are happy to carry out school visits like this one, to bring home to the children the importance of staying away from building sites, since they pose a number of potential hazards for young people.
“Our Schooner Way development, in Cardiff Bay, is a key project for us and for the region and, while it is under construction, we were delighted to meet the children and staff at St Cuthbert’s to share important site safety messages and to have some fun with Honor Goodsite.”
Katie Burden, from CCHA, said: “We had an enjoyable day at St Cuthberts, with a serious message. The children clearly loved trying on the high visibility clothing and the safety gear – perhaps there were some future construction workers among them.”
After the presentation, the pupils were tasked with designing a piece of artwork relating to construction site safety. The winning design will be enlarged and placed around the perimeter of the Schooner Way site.
Bernadette Brooks, headteacher of St. Cuthbert’s, said of the visit: “We were pleased to welcome Morganstone and CCHA to the school. It is important for us all to do what we can to keep children safe, both in and outside of school and I know this visit gave them some food for thought.”
The Schooner Way development will see 85 apartments and 32 houses built, overlooking Bute East Dock on Cardiff Bay. With construction starting early this year, completion of the development is projected for December 2018.
