World of Work Programme Lays Foundations for Careers in Construction for Llanelli Youngsters
Youngsters got a taste of working life on state-of-the-art housing developments when we held our World of Work programme recently.
Young people from Llanelli’s Ysgol Brygwyn and Ysgol Coedcae took part in the initiative, shadowing key staff at Morganstone’s Old Oak housing co-operative site in Carmarthen, Leonard Charles site in Swansea city centre and Parc y Dderwen site in Pontardawe.
One of our Project Managers, Ken Evans, was on hand to talk them through the many aspects of the building process, and about the array of careers available to young people in construction once they leave education.
Morganstone’s Community Engagement Manager, Antonia John, said: “We had a great week with the Ysgol Bryngwyn and Ysgol Coedcae pupils at our sites.
“It was encouraging to hear their enthusiasm for construction and that a number of them were keen to take up careers in the industry themselves in the near future.
“We were mindful of the fact that the young people took part in Morganstone’s World of Work programme during their half term holiday – which showed an impressive level of commitment from them.
“Here at Morganstone we are passionate about construction as a viable and a valuable career path and recognise it is vital to recruit new talent to meet the predicted construction skills gap and growth within the industry.
“I know it can be difficult for young people to envisage their futures and what a particular job will actually entail, day-to-day.
“It can also be tricky for them to identify the paths they need to take in order to create a career for themselves, so engaging with them face to face in this way is a great way of supporting them during these years when they have important educational and careers decisions to make.
“We are proud of the work we do under our World of Work programme and we are committed to continuing to support young people to explore and develop their knowledge, skills and career options.”
Barry Hale, Business Development Officer from Carmarthenshire County Council said: “We are delighted to be part of Morganstone’s most recent World of Work event. Initiatives like these help give youngsters valuable insights into the working world and its different environments, expectations and rewards, so it is something we wholeheartedly encourage our pupils to take part in.”
The Word of Work Programme blossomed out of a World of Work Day hosted by Morganstone, Carmarthenshire County Council and careers groups last year. Morganstone have now developed a comprehensive range of events aimed at promoting the construction industry and the wide and varied roles within the industry.
That day saw pupils from five comprehensive schools in Llanelli take part in a Construction and the Built Environment World of Work Day, with presentations and group tasks, at Parc Y Scarlets, Llanelli.
